What is HBOT?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric oxygen is a treatment in which patients breathe 100% oxygen inside a hyperbaric chamber at pressures greater than normal atmospheric (sea level) pressure.

Under these conditions of elevated oxygen levels and elevated ambient pressures, several beneficial effects are generated; effects that cannot be duplicated while breathing oxygen under atmospheric pressure. These effects provide the basis for a select number of applications, listed in the next column.

Hyperbaric oxygen is a commonly recognized treatment for the following conditions:

  • Air or gas embolism
  • Carbon monoxide  cyanide poisoning
  • Clostridial myositis and myonecrosis ( gaseous gangrene)
  • Traumatic acute ischemias
  • Decompression sickness
  • Arterial insufficiencies
  • Occlusion of the central rentinal artery
  • Difficult to heal wounds
  • Heavy blood loss unresponsive to transfusions
  • Intracranial abscesses
  • Soft tissue necrotizing infections
  • Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
  • Radionecrosis
  • Surgical grafts and flaps
  • Thermal burns
  • Sudden onset deafness

When injured or diseased tissues are exposed to hyperbaric doses of oxygen the following therapeutic effects can be realized:

  • Critical support of acutely hypoxic tissues
  • New blood vessel formation in hypoxic wounds
  • Reduction/elimination of intravascular gas formation
  • Enhanced antimicrobial effects in selected anaerobic and aerobic infections
  • Antagonism of ischemia-reperfusion injury in thermal burns, tissue reattachments
  • Vasoconstriction, without component hypoxia, in crush injury, compartment syndrome and acute thermal burns
